Test Taking Strategies
Great Test-Taking Tips
Tests can feel overwhelming, but good preparation and simple strategies can help you feel calmer, more confident, and ready to do your best.
Start Early
Do not wait until the night before the test. Review your notes regularly and divide the material into smaller, manageable sections.
Create a Study Plan
Schedule specific study times and set a realistic goal for each session. Remember to include short breaks.
Study Actively
Try different ways to review the material:
- Create flashcards.
- Complete practice questions.
- Explain concepts in your own words.
- Teach the material to someone else.
- Join a study group.
- Practice without looking at your notes.
Know What to Expect
Ask your instructor about the test format, topics covered, time limit, and materials you may bring.
Take Care of Yourself
Get enough sleep, eat a nutritious meal, drink water, and avoid excessive caffeine.
Prepare Your Materials
Gather everything you need ahead of time, including pencils, identification, calculators, notes, or other approved materials.
Arrive Early
Give yourself time to find the testing location, organize your materials, and settle in without feeling rushed.
Read the Directions Carefully
Pay attention to words such as:
Compare • Explain • Identify • Select • Calculate • Describe
Preview the Test
Quickly review the entire test. Notice the number of questions, point values, and sections that may require additional time.
Manage Your Time
Estimate how much time you can spend on each section. Save a few minutes at the end to review your answers.
Answer Easier Questions First
Completing questions you know can build confidence and help you earn points before working on more difficult questions.
Mark and Return
When permitted, mark difficult questions and return to them later. Do not let one question take too much of your time.

- Read the entire question before reviewing the answers.
- Try to answer the question in your mind first.

- Watch for words such as always, never, except, most, and best.
- Choose the best answer based on the information provided.
- Change an answer only when you have a clear reason.
True-or-False Questions
- Read every part of the statement.
- Watch for absolute words such as all, always, never, and only.
- Remember that one incorrect part can make the entire statement false.
Essay Questions
- Read the prompt carefully.
- Identify every part of the question.
- Create a brief outline before writing.

- Show your work whenever possible.
- Pay attention to signs, units, labels, and decimal points.
- Estimate your answer to see whether it is reasonable.
- Recheck calculations when time allows.
Pause and take a slow breath.
Breathe in slowly. Hold briefly. Exhale gently.
Relax your shoulders and focus on one question at a time.
“I do not have to be perfect. I only need to do my best, one question at a time.”
When your mind goes blank, move to another question and return later.
Before Submitting Your Test
- Make sure you answered every required question.
- Review questions you marked.
- Check that answers are entered in the correct spaces.
- Look for unanswered pages or sections.
- Confirm that your name and required information are included.
After the Test
Review your results when they become available. Think about which study strategies worked well and what you could do differently next time.
Every test is an opportunity to strengthen your preparation, confidence, and test-taking skills.
